AirLine Food Log

Ahh inflight catering, a topic of much debate, you either love it or hate it, (actually that's not true, it's rarely loved, its more tolerated..) personally I don't mind it, infact I kinda look forward to it, getting a little personal meal served to you by flustered, over worked, sometimes under paid cabin attendants that are just trying to get through a standard day in the office to them, has always been fun, since I was a little boy. I used to love settling into my seat on board the BIG TOP heading from SYD to SGD, wondering what culinary delights were ahead of me.

Since those days I've been fortunate enough to fly quite frequently for work and pleasure, and with all things food related, I've been taking pics of my food adventures up in the sky, if only I had a digital camera back in the 80s to snap up inflight meals from back then, would have been quite interesting to see the difference over the years.

The purpose of this blog, or ALFlog, is to bring to you a picture of a meal served with a short description, I won't be critiquing the food as such, however I will mention whether I found the meal to be nice or not and any other relevant short commments.

You should be able to tell now from the plate this is is Singapore Airlines again, I don't have their menu description, but it's pretty obvious this is a piece of roast chicken with some reasonably looking veggies, especially those carrots. Along with curries, easy meals on flights are rice dishes, here's Singapore Airlines serving their chicken biryani with raita in the business class cabin on a flight from Singapore to Chennai, predictably delicious, just as predictable I had the garlic bread to accompany.
For starters on this lovely flight in Singapore Airlines business class from Chennai to Singapore I chose the paneer tikka. Not really a paneer fan I have to say despite it being cold it went well with the side salad. The garlic bread didn't match the dish but I had to have it! With Emirates again in economy, this tray of food was written up in the menu as 'Roast beef in onion gravy served with mashed potatoes, green beans, and carrots' and 'Quinoa Salad' with a 'Dark Chocolate Mousse' Was delicious and I must confess I had the whole mousse.
Believe it or not this interesting looking tray of food is a 'North Indian Fish Curry with stir fried carrot, cauliflower and basmati rice' presented by Emirates in their economy cabin, I rarely eat fish on a plane but decided to give it ago and was quite pleased. In the premium economy cabin with Singapore Airlines I had this chicken noodles which they explained on their menu as 'Braised egg noodles with black pepper chicken and oyster sauce', it was ok, definitely better than the chicken ontop of that boiled pasta.
How about something to freshen things up a bit? A lovely, albeit small fruit plate served as my chosen dessert on board with Sinagpore Airlines, it does amaze me how crunchy and fresh the fruit tasted, the crackers with cheese was also a nice touch, unlike my feet in the pic! This chicken and noodles with mushrooms and bok choi was incredibly good, especially considering I'm on a plane, did Singapore Airlines bring a wok and chef onboard? Sadly, I haven't had this again despite searching for it on menus.
For a change we're now in premium economy with our favourite.... Singapore Airlines, This semi-unappetising looking tray of food is braised chicken in grainy mustard sauce served with seasonal vegetables and steamed potatoes. I distinctly remember thinking how 'not bad' it was, I even ate the tuna salad! We're still in premium economy with Singapore Airlines, but this time it's breakfast, I rarely eat sweet things on a plane as my meal but I had to give this a go after reading the menu 'French toast with Nutella vanilla marscapone and strawberries' I couldn't complain too much, after all I was at 35,000 feet.
Flying somewhere over Europe with Emirates here's a pic of something of I have no idea about, looks like the entree (or appetizer to some of you), I'd love to know what that fried circle is, but overall this little starter looks quite good, and of course I would have had as much garlic bread as possible. Sticking with Emirates, this time in economy, we have what is described as 'Nonya Beef Curry with vegetables and steamed rice' Whatever it's called this was delicious, my only complaint is the prawn/shrimp salad, I sampled it, but wasn't to my liking.
Who doesn't love a curry on a plane? Probably alot of people, but I reckon it's one of the best meals to eat up in the sky, really easy to reheat, and the delay between eating and cooking let's the flavours enhance, this chicken curry with Emirates was delicious and that pasta salad thing on the side was also very tasty. Now this ones a mystery, I have a suspicion this was a pre-ordered meal, I bet that bean curry woulda been tasty, I really wish I knew what that onion jam looking thing was, the rice looks like standard saffron (maybe) rice and that main curry, no idea, could be beef, lamb or chicken, either way with Sinagpore Airlines it must have been decent.
May of 2023 heading from Sydney to Singapore the first course arrives at my seat, prosciutto and melon, not my favourite thing to eat but I don't mind experimenting when on a flight, maybe that's not a good thing. In my opinion this tasted about as good as it looked. Back on board with Singapore Airlines in their amazing business class we have yet another salad. I can't remember what this actually was, but we can see cucumber, some red chilli, a lemon wedge and something that perhaps looks like pineapple sitting on an iceberg lettuce leaf, I bet this wasn't as good as the garlic bread!
Cruising on board Emirates from Dubai to Prague I was first served what is described as breakfast deli platter consisting of thinly sliced beef pastrami, grilled chicken breast, gouda cheese, marinated potato salad and fresh crudites. Served with a croissant and the usual breakfast fanfare of juices, tea and coffee. Was reasonable despite the look. Still on board with Emirates heading to Prague from the lunch selections I had no choice but to try lamb biryani which is described as lamb marinated in spices and slow cooked with rice garnished with fried cashew nuts, raisins and onions. It was quite dry, the raisins sucked as they always do in biryani, but was edible especially with a glass of red.
Flying from Dubai to London with Emirates, this has to be one of the best meals I've had on an airplane, business or economy. The yoghurt based chicken curry with the sauteed spinach and basamti rice, with the delicate chicken was really very good. Applause to the caterers In my wildest dreams I never thought I would fly Air Algiera, but here I was, on board from Algiers to Cairo, and to my surprise a meal was served, unlike my flying companion I braved it, there is no other way to describe the main than cat food, however the beetroot and corn salad was nicely detinned though.
I would be lying through my teeth if I tried to write about where I had this and what it was, so I'll just guess, looks like a piece of fillet steak with a mushroom sauce (kinda) and some asparagus, carrots and red onions, I'm sure it was reasoanable, especially after a couple of the red wines. I was so excited to see this on an inflight menu, heading back to Dubai from Cairo, I was panicking they would run out before getting to me, thankfully it wasn't the case, and for fried kibbe served 10kms in the sky, I was pretty happy, I would have rathered tahini over the yoguhurt sauce, and the vermicelli rice instead of the steamed rice, but still a great surprise.
Another Emirates flight going from Dubai to somewhere, This was grilled chicken with provencal sauce. As expected the chicken breast was quite dry but was washed down quite adequately with whichever red I was enjoying at the time. I can't remember where I was going and what airline I was sitting on but I do remember that sauce that came along with these medallions was sensational and I wanted more, made the dry lamb quite nice.
Can't quite recall where this was to be honest, but I do remember the semi sun dried tomatoes going quite will with the pasta and my wine! From Dubai to London on board with Emirates I choose the Roast Chicken breast with onion sauce and mashed potato along with seasoned sugarsnap peas and carrots, quite reasonable and I think better than the other option of Fish Briyani with raisins and nuts
Breakfast with Turkish Airlines, flying back from Istanbul to Dubai in May 2015, quite a nice spinach pastry with a bit of cheese, apparently a regular breakfast item in Turkey Dinner onboard Turkish Airlines heading from Dubai to Istanbul. They called it a Turkish STyle Minsed Beef with Ratatouille and Bulgur. I loved it.
On board with Singapore Airlines, enroute from Sydney to Singapore, relaxing in the nose end of the 777-300er, starting with a glass of red after which this entree arrived, some fish thing, was gross, had half a bite, then continued with the wine We're still on board that SIA 777-300er, this dish of chicken, mushrooms with fettuccine placed in front of me was definitely much better than the entree, and was polished off along with a few more glasses of red. Very indulging the SIA cabin crew are!
Dunno how they keep the fruit so crunchy and fresh tasting, it's better than most places you buy from on the ground! So yes, this rather small plate, of neatly presented fruit was enjoyed post meal watching a movie and a cup of black tea I'm not usually one to try 'adventurous' food 10kms in the sky, however after a nap I felt brave and ordered Nasi Lemak for breakfast. How bad could it be? SIA's inflight catering is awesome, it wasn't bad, but I wished I had stuck with the omelette.
In early 2011 flying back to Sydney with Singapore Airlines I was served this plate of food, I forgot to take a pic of the menu, but it looks like some kinda roasted bird, probably duck along with a lentil type salad. Not a duck fan, especially cold, I ate the lentils. This was one of my first 'proper' steak meals on a flight and I have to say, despite being in business class with Singapore Airlines it was pretty bad. The potato gratin thing was good, and due to the copious amounts of red wine I managed to polish off the steak with minimal fuss.
Even though this had prawns in it (not a huge fan of them) the masterchefs in the Singapore Airlines kitches made this Singapore noodles tasted amazing and my very short beer washed it down perfectly. Not sure what this was called but this starter of prawns, eggs, potato and a few olives was actually devoured quite quickly, probably had something to do with my blood alcohol level.
Probably one of the best meals I've had on a plane, Singapore Airlines dished up these incredible curried lamb chops with Jasmine rice, the herbed potatoes on the side were excellent, while the roti was a little tough it went well with the beans. Now with Etihad in their A380 business class heading from Sydney to Abu Dhabi, I can't think of a better way to start the journey with a glass of shiraz paired with their mezze plate. Those vine leaves... amazing.
Still in Etihad business class on the A380 I had a steak with red wine jus and more red wine, the steak was just ok, but that garlic bread was so crunchy, the potatoes and carrots were good too. Before landing in Abu Dhabi this is the breakfast I had, the potato rosti was good, as was the sausage, the rest of the plate was quite bland to be honest, but the croissant was great with my coffee.
Description is coming soon, some photos are from a few years back so need some research! In the meantime enjoy the pic On a flight from Chennai to Bangalore, had this delicious little combo of chicken tikka, samosas and some pakoras served up along with some galub jamun for dessert, very impressive for an hour flight, love Kingfisher!

Description is coming soon, some photos are from a few years back so need some research! In the meantime enjoy the pic In 2012 this plate of chicken ontop of some vegetable thing with a thick balsamic reduction was served to me by Emirates in their A380 business class on a flight from Sydney to Dubai, the balsamic went wonderfully with the chicken.
A much lighter breakfast option again with Emirates on their A380, the croissant tasted about as good as it looked, but the fruit was surprisingly good. Breakfast of champions Emirates business class style on board the massive A380. While the omelette was prepared very well, it did lack a bit depth of flavour, as did the accompanying vegetables.
Here we have another mezze plate from Emirates. It's a great starter to have, it's not messy or difficult to eat and you can really take your time and savour all the different flavours whilst watching Family Guy. We're back with Emirates in the 777 business class, this chicken curry paired beautifully with the jasmine rice and that spinach corn thing was also good, the garlic bread is a strange bread to have with this meal but I will always get garlic bread on a plane when I can.
Despite what you might be thinking I did not finish this amazing piece of cake, but I did the wine and then some. So a beer is rarely had with an Arabic mezze plate, but hey, when you're in business class with Emirates on one of their beautiful 777's you can have whatever you desire!
Had this yummy south Indian style breakfast on, wait for it, Lufthansa on a flight from Chennai to Frankfurt in their economoy cabin on board the lovely queen of the skies 747-400. It was pretty good, especially the sambar with upma. Singapore Airlines economy offering for breakfast, you gotta admit it's pretty decent, and while the hashbrown wasn't exactly crispy, it was a tasty tray of food to start the trip from Sydney to Singapore, and yes, I even ate the chicken sausage!
